Classical Athenian Democracy and Oral Historical Tradition

I. E. Surikov

Athenian democracy generated no written political theory of itself, at least
in a developed form. Its supporters manifested their values through oral
discourse. Important elements of such a discourse were, for example, skolia
and funeral orations. Oral historical tradition, especially in the fi fth century
B.C., was among integral parts of the democratic ideology.

Keywords:
Athens, democracy, oral tradition, political ideology, skolia, funeral orations, history, Herodotus, Harmodius and Aristogiton
