Зарождение историописания в древней Мезоамерике

В статье рассматривается процесс зарождения традиции историописания в древней Мезоамерике во второй половине I тыс. до н.э. — первые века н.э. Ранние письменные источники исторического содержания до нас не дошли ввиду хрупкости исходного материала для письма (бумаги). Первые монументальные надписи появляются в среднеформативный период (вторая треть I тыс. до н.э.) независимо и практически одновременно в нескольких регионах, находящихся на значительном расстоянии друг от друга (Оахака, побережье Мексиканского залива), демонстрируя развитую систему письма и календаря. Следовательно, появление надписей не отражает сам процесс возникновения письменности (или письменностей), а свидетельствует о становлении общемезоамериканской традиции использовать монументальные надписи для фиксации истории. Общемезоамериканский формат надписи включал дату, указание на событие, имя и титул протагониста. От этих ранних текстов ведет свое происхождение такой общемезоамериканский вид источников как царские/коммеморативные надписи, который сохраняется в качестве одного из основных вплоть до испанского завоевания в первой трети XVI в.
В Юго-Восточной Мезоамерике во II или I в. до н.э. (первоначально в эпиольмекской культуре, а затем у майя) распространяется новая хронологическая система (так называемый «долгий счет»), который в отличие от использовавшихся раньше дат представлял собой датировку по эре. В ранних примерах «долгого счета» важным является точное размещение событий на временной шкале и фиксация уникальных (а не циклических) событий. Судя по сопутствующей иконографии (принятие инсигний власти), наиболее часто это были даты воцарения правителей. Чуть позднее в текстах отмечается использование «интервальных чисел», связывающих различные даты текста, что свидетельствует о том, что надписи представляют собой не просто последовательность  датированных записей, а связный текст исторического содержания, в котором хронологическое разворачивание повествования представляет собой важнейший элемент структуры.
