Skald and Skaldic Poetry in the “Star-Oddi's Dream”

I. A. Kucherova

The article is dedicated to the analysis of “Star-Oddi's Dream” (“Stjörnu-Odda draumr”). It shows how the author of the saga makes use of the traditional elements (motives, stylistic characteristics, distinctive plot features) typical for medieval Icelandic literary genres. He merges them into a single text by deliberately violating the genre peculiarities, changing the traditional narrative strategy, putting the motives into an unusual context and introducing elements of parody. Thus, “Star-Oddi's Dream” turns into some kind of elaborated literary game with a possible reader.

Keywords:
