The Oral Foundation of the “Chronicon terrae Prussiae” by Peter of Dusburg
In the article the problem of oral sources of the “Chronicon terrae Prussiae”
by Peter von Dusburg is discussed. In modern historiography primary attention
is mostly paid to written sources of the Chronicon. However, oral
sources are very important, as they emphasize epic aspect of the work. As far
as exempla are concerned (which are in the centre of the article), they refl ect
crusaders’ mentality and can serve for study both the ideology of the Teutonic
Order and psychology of its knights and their everyday life.
