В статьях тома обычаи и традиции античной и средневековой дипломатии анализируются на примере конкретно-исторических исследований. Большое внимание уделяется истории развития дипломатии древней Руси и ее соседей. Часть статей основана на материалах чтений "Восточная Европа в древности и средневековье", посвященных столетию со дня рождения члена-корреспондента АН СССР В.Т. Пашуто и его научному наследию. Наконец, материалы тома включают в себя публикации вновь переведенных на русский язык исторических источников.
